Where do you fight your battles?

A new song we recently taught our congregation is called "Battle Belongs." This is a fun, upbeat tempo which the congregation is gravitating us doing, especially as we close out each service with an upbeat song.

It's sung by a Christian artist named Phil Wickham and written by him.

We do a couple of his songs "Living Hope," This is Amazing Grace" to name a few. I'm sure there may be more we'll do down the line. He is a prolific songwriter and writes biblically based songs.

There is a line that I'm reminded of something whenever we sing "Battle Belongs," however:

"So, when I fight, I'll fight on my knees... with my hands lifted high. Oh God, the battle belongs to you."

It's the hook of the song, catchy part that "grabs" the listener, the part we remember, and the part that keeps us invested in the song.

This is the most important part of the song, as it reminds us of where our battles our best fought and reminds that God fighting our   battles, we need only be still.

 Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth! -Ps. 46:10

The songwriter's reference is in from 2 Chronicles 20.

But there are many, many times in the bible when God fights our battles.

The imagery of the song reminds us that prayer is the most important tool we can use to fight our battles.

Why prayer is important

Fighting the battle on our knees is opposite of how the world think we should fight our battles. The world wants to pick up our swords (or guns). God wants to pick up His word (They don't call it the God's sword for nothing!) God's word = (the) God Sword!)

Prayer brings us into conversation with God. Prayer IS conversation with God. Conversation is how relationships are built.

Jesus calls us to be like little children. (Matt. 18) Just believing and holding on to faith; no questioning. But what else does a child do? Don' they ask to get picked up, right? Carried. Little legs tired? "Mom, Dad, pick me up! Carry me!"

Maybe it's the legs are tired, or they just love to be up higher, see the world from a higher vantage point. "Carry me!"

Quotes I like:

  • When life knocks you down on your knees, you're in a perfect position to pray.
  • When life gives you more than you can stand, kneel.
  • Fight all of your battles on your knees and you win every time.

Down here on earth, on this side of eternity we are fighting battles.

What God has said:

Deuteronomy 3:22 You must not fear them (your enemies), for the Lord your God Himself fights for you.

1 Sam.17:47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands.

2 Ch. 20:15 And he said, "Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehosaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: 'Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's.' "

1 John 4:4b He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

One of my husband's friends from church is struggling lately with being still. A year or two ago, several of my female friends in church were struggling with that, too. It's not easy, our human condition is to keep going (maybe that is also a sin).  I like to stay busy. God's the only one with all the time in the world! But sometimes we do need to sit still and wait... while God fights our battles. That is so much easier said than done, but isn't that much of the challenge found when we desire to walk with Christ, too?
