May 4th is National Day of Prayer

This Thursday, May 4th is the National Day of Prayer.

It takes place at communities, churches, parks, schools, and statehouses and in youth groups, and families and homes everywhere throughout the United States, to lift up petitions and prayers to God.

Now, prayer is something that should be done either way, no matter what, God tells us to pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17).
Prayer activates the Word of God.

But sometimes things are more apt to get done when they are scheduled for.  And we can all agree our country is in need of an awakening and a revival, and this Thursday is a chance to intercede for our neighbors and our country.

About the task force behind the observance:

The National Day of Prayer Task Force is led by President, Kathy Branzell and governed by nine Board of Directors, who also preside over the National Prayer Committee. Their mission is to mobilize unified, public Prayer in America. Their efforts are carried out in accordance with Judeo-Christian beliefs.

The National Day of Prayer, as designated by our government, belongs to all Americans—it is not owned by any one group, and every American can observe NDP in their own way. Everyone is invited to attend a NDP Task Force event to hear messages and prayers in the name of Jesus Christ. We pray for Jesus to bless those who lead and those in need throughout our country.

About the day:

The National Day of Prayer observance was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Truman. Each year since then our president has called upon the citizens of our nation to pray, and in 1988 President Reagan established this day of prayer to be the First Thursday of May. The significance for us as a nation is that it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founders sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical challenges and decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people.

Each year one scripture is focused on. This year it is:

"…The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." James 5:16

This theme this year 2023 is about the power of prayer. The Greek term is translated "Polus," the same word used to describe God's mercy (1 Pet.1:3), Jesus' glory (Matt. 24:30, and our reward in heaven (Matt. 5:12)

Why Pray for America?

God is sovereign and nothing comes as a surprise to Him. Whether we face fluctuating economies, threats from abroad, unrest at home, or other troubling circumstances, our Heavenly Father is not caught unaware.

Through prayer, we are able to tap into God's wisdom, strength, protection and peace. He stands ready to respond to our needs when we humbly ask for divine intervention into the affairs of men.

As we pray from American whose pledge of allegiance recounts that we are, "One nation under God" and whose currency states that it is "in God we trust, " we want Americans to encounter the God who rules over their country.

He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals His thoughts to man, He who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth-- the Lord God Almighty is His name.

-- Amos 4:13
